The Colorado 14er Speed Record Climbing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Colorado 14er Speed Record is over 50 years old!\u00a0 Over the years the nature of the record has changed dramatically.\u00a0 Decades ago, lacking guidebooks (there may have been some old guidebooks, I am not 100% sure about that), GPS, internet, 14ers.com, and various types of maps, it was truly an adventure of exploration.\u00a0 I imagine a big part of the challenge was just getting your hands on the USGS 7.5 minute Quadrangle maps of each of the areas you were interested in.\u00a0 In some cases you would have needed several maps to cover your area.\u00a0 These weren’t small maps, either.\u00a0 Those\u00a0topo maps\u00a0are like the size of posters.\u00a0 You would have had to search the maps for roads that would get you close to the summit, and once out of the car there may or may not have been any kind of trail to the summit.<\/p>\n

Gear has dramatically changed over time too.\u00a0 I remember my step dad carrying around maps in an army surplus map bag that must have weighed a couple of pounds – almost as heavy as the typical day pack people use today.\u00a0 Gear over time has become lighter and in most cases better allowing people to move much faster than in the past.<\/p>\n

It was in this era, back in 1960 that the history of the Colorado 14er Speed Record begins.<\/p>\n
